It plays into the George Creel media industry the US government has always favored.

George Edward Creel was the OG master at slipping in narratives to publications.

You have to admit this came across like some old-timey George Creel propaganda.

And of course we had to trot out a good dollop of American-bashing with the Creel commission and such.

At one point Creel had 80K on his payroll and to the best of my knowledge it's never properly been explained how his WWI organization was re-orged.

Read Bernays (or the Creel Report if you can find it) for an account of how personalised advertising and manual social graph exploitation worked about a century ago.

Remember Bernays was an alumnus of the first truly industrial scale propaganda effort, the Creel Committee, set up to convince US citizens they should support US entry into WWI.

(I think in one of Bernays' books, or maybe the Creel report?) They used knowledge of the social graph to proceed clique by clique, triangulating such that their point of view appeared to come from multiple independent outside sources.

Creel never used straight-out propaganda like the BBC would have and preferred that "news media" (on all sides of the spectrum) inject state-sponsored innuendo.
