To take your example, the wolf -> chihuahua would have been frankensteining had it been over the course of a singular or very small amount of generations.

The former reason suffices quite well on its own, but the latter is not entirely inconsiderable, much as one tends to choose among the sturdiest of one's footwear when dressing for a visit to one's friend the chihuahua breeder.

I completely agree with that, but without human intervention, wouldn't breeds that can't reproduce naturally (great dane & chihuahua) most likely lead to separate species given enough time?

These classifications are amazing but the fact that the first image in the article is classified as "a dog wearing a wide-brimmed hat" and not as "a chihuahua wearing a sombrero" is telling of how far we are from true understanding of images.

Chihuahua dogs of good character still challenge the perception of those who think a dog should be on a human scale.
