What's with all the Yoda language here lately, is it a Reddit thing that's spreading?

All fine ideas, but I wouldn't discount yoda-conditions as not being in the same category.

A nice example of this is yoda expressions in, say Java.

Clearly, Yoda has 900 years of experience dealing with datetime bugs.

Second, there's a mental hurdle to overcome to fight the Yoda speak, which is making sure that all of your words (i.e., functions) are tiny and well-factored.

This makes a huge difference, because the thing about having such short functions is that the Yoda speak isn't any worse than when you're doing a builder pattern in Java or the like.

The initial reasoning for them was to prevent accidental assignment, since a C/C++ compiler will complain on this: if (null = x) but not on this: if (x = null) In Java, neither is allowed, so the whole yoda construct is almost pointless.

A lot of us find Yoda conditions easier to read: if(0 == very_long_function_name_here(param1, param2)) { Tells me a lot after I've read a little of the line, whereas: if(very_long_function_name_here(param1, param2) == 0) { Makes the == 0 part easy to miss, and buried behind a lot of clutter.

It's like a cross between "Fear is the mind-killer" from Dune, and something Yoda would say.

Back when I was a 16 year old mediocre chess player, the captain of our high school team took me aside, set up a position and asked "Do you like white or black?" I looked at the board and said "I don't know." And channeling a Yoda then decades in the future, he said "That is why you lose." His name was Matthew Looks, and his point was that it doesn't matter whether you're right or wrong.

If I mix in with a few 'Yoda conditionals' then the world is really going to love my code.
