I love fishermans friend, but I think the sorbitol is guaranteed excessive flatulence.

Some sweeteners, particularly those in the sugar alcohol family (and sorbitol especially), can cause laxative effects and other GI-related issues.

Some chewing gums have xylitol but don't say how much and they still have other stuff like sorbitol and maltitol.

Also glaringly absent is any mention of the sugar alcohols: sorbitol, xylitol, maltitol.

Mannitol, sorbitol, isomalt, maltitol, and lactitol will all give you horrible gas and diarrhea.

Furthermore again, some energy production is "learned" - the first time you try to digest sorbitol or xylitol, you derive exactly 0 kcal/gram from them.

Sorbitol (also found in plums and apples), and shares the vast majority of its properties.

Sorbitol is the reason prune juice is an effective laxative.
