Even a 5400rpm WD Blue can run circles around a 7200rpm Seagate drive.

As far as why other drives have such high AFR, historically Seagate and WD have had much better QA on their server class drives.

Something _horrible_ happened on the 3TB Seagate batch.

I've been using Samsung and Intel SSDs for years now with failure rates below the failure rates of WD drives (and well below Seagate failure rates).

The bigger problem facing HDDs now is that almost all major manufactures are bought up by WD and Seagate and this is starting to show the ill effects of a duopoly.

I remember the IBM Deathstar drives, my Maxtor drives repeatedly dying along with their RMA replacements & the issues Seagate seems to have with 1.5TB & 3TB drives.

I've gone through over a half dozen Seagate 2.5 drives (spindle and hybrid) and one 3.5 external in the past five years, and I'm lucky if they last 2 years.

Avago seems to like buying up companies like this and piecing them out, like how a lot of LSI's storage controller related assets were sliced off and sold to Seagate after being acquired by Avago; I'm not sure if this is a good thing for Broadcom.
