The two Pfennig coins made before 1968 were pure bronze and worth more than two Pfennig as scrap metal in later years.

Wouldn't that mean you'd have to give each Pfennig individually?

If I recall correctly, they had a redemption value of 25 Pfennig (0.25 Deutsche Mark, roughly 0.12 EUR).

So in theory you could give them 1 Pfennig ( = 1/100 of 1 Deutsch Mark) and demand that they exchange that to Euro.

I spent a whole afternoon researching how much almonds you could by in 1952 post-war west germany for 50 pfennig.

I never encountered the Pfennig sign in Germany--it must have been out of fashion for at least a few decades.

If you do the math 1 Pfennig ~= 0.5 Euro Cent.

Now in theory you would have to give your bank 50 million 1 Pfennig coins (separately) and you would have gotten back 100 million euro cents = 1 million euros.

I inherited my great-grandmas recipe book that calls for "50 pence [pfennig] worth of almonds".

In light of this, I'm gonna have to stick with the "easier for parents to spot those swallowed pfennig on the way out" explanation.

Most signage used "123,40 DM" or even "12 Pf." (for Pfennig, the equivalent of cents) or left it off entirely, I think.

For 'bread buns, rolls' (or whatever they are called outside Germany) the price in Eastern Germany was fixed at 10 Pfennig since forever, and it was commonly called a "10er Semmel" because of this (or a "fiver" for the small version).

This used to be 15 Pfennig, a pretty high amount when the deposit was introduced.

But I do remember from the 1980s that a roll of bread was ~2 Euro cents (5 Pfennig), nominally.
