I prefer a traditional desktop (debian/kde myself) so I'm not fond of Unity and loathe guh-nome 3.

Guh-nome and Unity don't really like to allow you to do that.

Guh-nome has it's "you're an idiot" philosophy, which I find really painful.

Even though I'm fully aware of the 'correct' pronunciations, my preference for "Gee Enn You" and "Nome" is too strong.

It's a hard problem, because the market and regulatory frameworks are very different for me, in San Francisco, than for my dad, on the Big Island of Hawai'i, and both in turn are very different from people in Manhattan, or Montana, or in Nome.
