I believe the plural of antidote is "I'm not sure which snake just bit me, just give me all the antitoxins!"

Plasmids can act as parasites on their bacterial hosts - many carry pairs of genes that encode both a toxin and a less stable antitoxin. If the plasmid is lost, the bacterium will die[4].

Which seem to do exactly that: suicide, releasing toxins [which their clonemates can produce the antitoxins for] to kill off competing strains!

Microorganisms have been able to cope with each other for damn near a billion years using toxin-antitoxin systems. People are exploring these as negative selection systems.

Kim Lewis is still churning out papers on toxin-antitoxin complexes in antibiotic persistence, when they are irrelevant to any case of persistence in nature. There are many more names to name, but I've largely forgotten them at this point.

You can use oxygen, temperature, and light-sensitive gene promoters and toxin-antitoxin plasmids to make ON-OFF switches that would hobble bacterial replication in the wild. It's a tough problem, and my guess is you'd want to use several of these switches together.

For example, the robotcar drives a robot transporting the antitoxin that will neutralize a biobomb that could kill 100,000 humans in ten minutes, while the external robot transports the bronchodilator that will save an asthmatic child, and there's no way the robocar and the external robots can avoid themselves without hurting the passenger robot, then the passenger robot should take priority and the robocar should optimize its safety.
