Or install kubuntu-desktop, switch to it for login (kdm), and select the Gnome environment there.

So I'm now a Kubuntu user (it's like Ubuntu but with the K Desktop Environment instead of Gnome).

Now, the bad thing about Kubuntu is that the out-of-the-box experience could be better.

Not only that, it's not clear to me what level of authority Canonical's executives have over the Kubuntu community in the first place.

Anyone know how to set the compose key from standard Kubuntu 9.10?

FF 3.5 on Kubuntu gives me that warning that I haven't seen before.

Disclosure: I'm on the Kubuntu Council, so I might have a biased opinion.

I am running KUbuntu 15, very stock, and several needed packages were not mentioned, and the git clone commands did not work (Permission denied (public key).

The use of Kubuntu or systemd are incidental (the Kubuntu community has been a great aid!); nothing prevents any other distro from taking this - all on regular kde.org master branches slated for eventual release - and putting things together in the usual ways.

I would install a new distro just to try out a different DE, not realizing that the differences between kubuntu and ubuntu could be exchanged with a simple apt-get command.

It also is mentioned that the Kubuntu leader has tried to raise a licensing issue with Ubuntu for some time but has not gotten a satisfactory reply, and so has continued to raise it.

It will be able to do "convergence" desktops before even Ubuntu Touch because its running an identical software stack to Kubuntu, you just need to switch the running shell.

Its been basically dead in the water for over two years, since the tablet project went belly up, and there even used to be a "Kubuntu-active" fork of Kubuntu that the project was maintaining as a way to try out the Plasma Active desktop on top of a Kubuntu core.

The distribution is based on Kubuntu, and so far it works only on the Nexus 5.

Kubuntu already uses MAC, and since this is using Muon they can plug whatever app store they want in, including kde-apps.

Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or (my favorite) Fedora 8 should all be really easy to install.
