Following the growth of Archie’s popularity, two similar search engines Veronica and Jughead were created and they started indexing plain text files.

:-) I recall there used to be a veronica too (Very Easy Rodent Oriented Network something or the other....), then a jughead too...

Now I am old and been using search engines for a long time and remember Veronica and Jughead coming online and do think I have learned through the years how to word a search to optimize getting the results.

The pre-www search engines (gopher, Archie, jughead) were pretty sophisticated by allowing you to combine search expressions “and, or, near, phrase”, in essentially a regex style fashion, and they were getting better and better.

Original Web browsers were capable of using Gopher in a graphical way; in fact, being cross-protocol like that was a big deal in the early days, back when a lot of Universities had substantial amounts of information on Gopher servers and indexed by search software like Veronica and Jughead.
