The argument was destroyed by Hume before it was even put forth, ridiculed by Nietzsche (BGE 11, a very entertaining passage), and then had all its foundations removed by Quine in Two Dogmas.

After a brief skimming on my lunch break: The approach this author takes is similar to the one that Baruch Spinoza uses in formulating a system of ethics, and which David Hume tears apart.

The answer to the first question is related to an interpretation of David Hume known as Hume's Law, paraphrased as, "you can't derive an ought from an is".

It's not enough to say, "Hume proved we can't really know anything about the world of things." The claim is not that the current system is perfect.

But this is wrong: "Philosophy requires no 'givens', which is to say it is a valid field without requiring you to make any assumptions to partake in it." In 1748, David Hume explained why this isn't right.

The British Empiricist movement, featuring Locke, Berkeley and Hume, arose in response to the Continental Rationalists.

But overall, like David Hume, I am more fearful of the intense preferences of minorities than not.
