I'm heading from SF to Split, Croatia in 3 weeks for most of the summer.

I think Croatia and even Turkey would make sense there.

We've done Thailand, Mexico, India, Turkey, Croatia and the Philippines.

So say Italy booms, quotas would make living in Croatia no better than new Zealand or south Africa in terms of odds of getting into Italy (or Canada the US or Nigeria.) But politics would never allow a fair quota system to work.

Moving from one place to another should be their decision, just like a citizen from a poor city can decide to move to a richer city in the same country (or if you wish, a citizen from a poor EU state can move to a rich EU state - same reason why I fully supported poorer countries like Bulgaria, Romania & Croatia joining the EU & hope to see Turkey joining as well at some point in the future).

In Croatia, it's "Croatian" and it is also a separate language locally despite being almost entirely mutually intelligible with speakers of the Serbian form.

If you've ever been to Serbia/Croatia/Montenegro this is evident - to the point of being a little bit weird.

Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, Albania - they are certainly not good neighbors.

Kenya, Croatia, Serbia would be more recent examples, but it is a needless quibble.
