My parents came along because they'd never been to Banff and were excited about seeing the Canadian Rockies.

The story sounds very familiar to me, maybe the movie was part of Banff film festival?

So, going from Seattle up to Banff by way of the Sumas / Huntington crossing...

Anecdotal evidence is my last trip to go snowboarding in Banff in Alberta Canada.

I live near the Banff National Park in Canada, and it's a continuous game of tug-of-war for the wardens trying to decide what activities to allow in the park.

But, I think there some unique things worth seeing for an American: The old parts of Montreal/Quebec city, and the Alberta Rockies, especially the corridor between Banff and Jasper.

Many Canadians will eventually go to Banff or Jasper (though it's surprising how many people here in Ontario where I live now have never been west of the province, but almost all have been to the US)...

For the GDT the start is pretty easy to get to (Banff is ~1.5 hr from Calgary Airport, flights from anywhere) but the finish in NM is also in the middle of nowhere.
