They certainly predate Christianity and various "heathen" religions were full of them: Indo-European, Amerindian, African...

That is, "race" in the sense of genetics; in the US, not just African-Americans but plenty of mestizos with a lot of Amerindian genes.

The government's big racial categories are somewhat inaccurate (especially hispanic, since some hispanics are European and some are Amerindian).

According to 23andme I could be anywhere from a quarter to a third Amerindian, and brown enough to have never been called or mistaken for white.
