It's hard for someone there to migrate to Thailand like how Cambodians in Siem Reap or Laotians around Vientiane do.

By only the narrowest of gaps: LCR ends in Vientiane and the train line to Bangkok terminates at Thanaleng outside town.

The only problem is that there are only two white sticks in each bucket and Vientiane is very far from Phnom Penh....

I wanted to post this last night but the internet went down in Vientiane (again) so I just went to sleep.

I cosign everything in the OP article regarding logistics, current availability, the Vientiane Gap, etc.

If there was a way to get from one station to another by rail between Thanaleng and Vientiane I would have done it!

I traveled from Kunming to Vientiane overland over a decade ago.

I visited Vientiane in Laos a couple years ago.

Now I can hop on to any number of free webcams in Vientiane and check out the happenings where I used to live just for the heck of it, no questions asked, no money required.

And I remember clearly there was only one English sign anywhere in the Vientiane Airport, and it was a warning before the metal detector that said 'No Guns, No Knives, No Durian' in many different languages.

Couldn't find them in Cambodia or Thailand, but there is a shop in Vientiane (the capital of Laos) that bought a crate of buckets of multi colored sidewalk chalk years ago, and I'm the only one who buys it.

I wish if Honourable school boy could be adapted for the screen, perhaps as a miniseries, it covers lot of ground, the Hong Kong chapters are a good description of the years under British rule, and the chapter on the fall of Vientiane is also very notable.

The "use local currency" banners were also hanging in Vientiane, far from the (Chinese) border, back when USD was the threat.

Even the New York Times report in Laos, who, until then, had swallowed whole every press release circulating in Vientiane, noted on September 13 that "briefings have noticeably played down the activities of North Viet-Nam in the conflict.

You mean of course the fall of Saigon, not Vientiane.

Vientiane as well is a good option, they love foreigners there and there are a lot of french expats.

Probably the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life was at a French restaurant in Vientiane, Laos.
