It's been a few years, but if I recall correctly farmed tilapia produce 1kg per 1.1kg of feed.

Eventually, the tuna are overfished and the agricultural conglomerates switch to farmed tilapia.

I spent $7 for food this week, and I ate like a king (tilapia, fresh veggies, etc).

Not even the most hard core environmentalist cares about farmed tilapia or catfish.

Farmed Tilapia might also be an option, though I'm not clear on how flexible their diet is.

Reminds me of how I left my trader joes tilapia in the oven too long last night.

Catfish are the top species (for food, by weight) produced in the US, and they seem nearly as durable as Tilapia in small systems.

As an aside, it's pretty difficult to maintain those price levels if you'd like to eat more than oatmeal, spinach salad, and tilapia every day.

According to this post [1], a "low-class" meal in the Philippines would be "grilled tilapia, homemade chicken soup, rice, salad with homemade dressing, sticky rice cooked in coconut, and a homemade sauce", while a high class meal would be pizza from Domino's.

Tilapia is a great species and the resilience is impressive.

Tilapia may well be fine as they are largely fed a plant based diet.

Tilapia is produced in large scale this way quite successfully, and is a desirable meat that sells for a good price here in Brazil.
