If you want to eat teff and can't grow teff, you have to import teff.

Beef would be more expensive and some other countries would lose cheap imported feed (alfalfa, teff, etc).

It's an entirely different family of grasses (millet, teff, sorghum are all types of millets).

A side note - Teff flour is a bit of a godsend to gluten-free folks.

Genuine teff doesn't illicit a response in Celiacs so my wife has been able to use it (along with other less common flours like buckwheat(yes, the name is super misleading) and even crushed chickpeas) to make all sorts of baked treats.

And for grains, there's so many things to choose from: Teff, Whole wheat, wild rice, oat flour, oats, cornmeal, farro, brown rice.
