Try a Sauternes against a sauvignon blanc and you may change your mind.

That's completely ignoring the unique honey flavor of late harvest Butrytus that is unique to Sauternes and some Riesling, which you will never find in a red.

And my god, are the mangoes amazing: perfumey, floral, intensely sweet; they're the Sauternes of mangoes.

I wish I could find whites that taste like reds, but I dislike almost all unaccompanied whites, with some exceptions around sauternes, some Rieslings, Gewürztraminer, etc.; and I wish I could find cheap reds that taste like intense Cote Rotie syrah or savoury Burgundy pinot noir, but the same grapes grown elsewhere come nowhere close.

Wines like Montbazillac, Loupiac, Pineau des Charentes, Sauternes, the wide gamut of wines from Alsace and Jura are all respected and recognized as "the good stuff".

There are many factors that influence whether a wine can be reliably aged - too many to list in a comment - but if you buy a bottle of Vintage Port, Madeira, or Sauternes, it will be enjoyable for decades at the very least.
