Source: I'm a personal friend; we play roleplaying games together fairly often; I go to one of the several cons that he goes to regularly; I have been discussing roleplaying games with him online on-and-off going back to rec.games.frp.advocacy in the mid-late 90's.

Gamers of a certain age - not just computer gamers, I see this in roleplaying as well - seem wedded to the illusion of freedom or realism or risk, will sacrifice story or balance for their sake.

It's something very rare and for me its a bite to the heart that World of Warcraft more or less killed this interaction between players..made them marionettes who gave their wisdom to the current generation of players, roleplaying less than a cow on the field.

But gaming has changed since 2000, there are action roleplaying games that are huge like Elder Scrolls (Morrowind, Skyrim, etc), Gothic/Risen, Witcher, etc that have all huge maps with usually seamless worlds packed with a lot of hand placed quests and side plots.

Adults should stop doing that childish stuff, like oolouring, watching cartoons, reading fantasy and sci-fi, eating sweets, playing video games and bordgames and roleplaying games, cosplaying, laughing at toilet humour, collecting stamps and postcards and action figures, make funny faces, eat junk food...

Other games have "roleplaying" servers as well.
