What is your opinion on Prometheus and more importantly on push vs pull models for metric aggregation?

Anything holistic system that _doesn't_ do this is an evolutionary dead end; eventually, something like Prometheus or Influx will replace them.

As for Prometheus and InfluxDB, I follow these more closely and have a better understanding of how they operate.

Unfortunately as it stands, InfluxDB takes roughly 14x more disk space for exactly the same data (without replication) for a typical Prometheus use case.

To me, the pull has been the Achilles heel of prometheus.

I know for prometheus.io we can handle at least 1M metrics per server.

We ran into this with prometheus.io and godep.

However I just discovered prometheus.io which looks like a very compelling solution.

I don't understand why Prometheus uses leveldb to begin with though, why do you need it vs using a const offset of an interval?

However, overall I think Prometheus is a great project.

My home systems are ansible managed, giving me things like wireshark installed everywhere if I need it and new machines automatically hooked into Prometheus monitoring (which is much easier with my debs).

For what I've described, I quite like the Prometheus approach, but for my very specific use case 1-file-per-metric only beats the filesize block overhead often enough for very long timeframes; to long.

So the comparison is not really fair, it's just maybe not the right tool for Prometheus-style monitoring.

Prometheus uses a file per timeseries, with two levels of delta encoding to keep the data small.

I'm looking forward to InfluxDB cluster so we can use it as long term storage for Prometheus.io.
