To make that a pizzicato violin, you snap the decay and sustain to nothing, and leave a little release.

Violin pizzicato (plucked) sounds completely different than violin arco (bowed), yet it's the same string being excited into vibration.

It works best with a bow since it's hard to get the simultaneous sounding of the notes perfect pizzicato.

You don't need production-quality sounds, but you do need a faithful reproduction of the notation — something that understands ‘pizzicato’ etc.

My cello is particularly resonant, and in hindsight (is this confirmation bias talking?) has very little sustain on pizzicato (plucking) compared to my cheap, less-resonant student cello.

With music the obvious alternatives fall into a couple categories:a system for each instrument, something that can succinctly capture the expressive bits of a given instrument (fingering, bowing, vibrato, etc.) and throw out bits that don't work on that instrument (vibrato on a piano, pizzicato on a wind instrument etc.), but it gets impractical stupidly fast.

Pizzicato is percussive and decaying, arco is more smooth and sustaining.
