Esther represents a New Passover [ Pesach ] for her people in the Promised Land.

What the Jews will typically do in preparation for Pesach is to cleanse the home of all forbidden leavening and unkosher food: chametz.

In other European languages it is typically called either something that sounds like Pesach or it is called something related to the story of Christ.

So Pesach -> Pascha in Greek, then onwards to other languages.

Either something that sounds like it is inspired by Pesach (the Jewish passover) like our Norwegian or Danish Påske, Swedish Påsk, Dutch Pasen or something completely different.

Edit - also Passover is Pesach in Hebrew.

I have a hard time taking seriously the suggestion that opening a phone deserves to be spoken of in the same way as pesach, epiphany, Eid al-Adha, or your wedding night.

Basically in the past matzo was made the day it was used because it would spoil otherwise (like any bread), but making matzo came with the risk of creating leaven which was a serious prohibition on Pesach itself.

The Latin and Greek name of the holiday is "Pascha", which is a direct cognate to the Jewish holiday "Pesach", or passover.

I hadn't made the connection between Pesach and Yom Kippur but they share this asceticism, and the atonement of Yom Kippur echoes the humility of the Passover "cleansing of the soul" ritual.

Most of my Orthodox friends call it "Pascha" (and set its date based on the Julian calendar), and my Messianic friends consider it part of the larger "Pesach" (or "Passover" when they decide to communicate it in English).

So it's better to make it in advance, before Pesach, so they switched to dry/hard matzo that can keep forever.

Even Easter is tainted because it was actually supposed to be the Passover (Pesach) but was based off a Pagan holiday instead.

Right now we are in the Chol Hamoed part of Passover/Pesach, with the Chag resuming and sundown tonight and continuing for 2 days.
