Three things happen: HN software will penalize your post, HN moderators will penalize your post, and/or HN users will do it by flagging and by complaining in the thread.

But if one topic, like Snowden, starts to dominate the front page HN will not hesitate to penalize it.

This isn't helped by an admissions process that seems to penalize Asian Americans due to their ethnicity.

Instead of regulating devices they should just enforce the law and penalize those who break it.

You're not allowed to penalize an employee for discussing wages simply because their discussion is factually inaccurate or statistically unsound.

We penalize fluff, articles that contain no new information or have recently been discussed, etc.

Theoretically, the FCC could penalize router manufacturers that allow their routers to be flashed.

It doesn't mean the co-workers were right, but it doesn't penalize them if the didn't intend to be bad (because doing so would be a slippery slope to thought policing).

Plus, the franchisor can penalize the franchisee, or revoke the franchise outright.

All in all, as long as you set canonical tags for your posts, the duplicate content on another domain shouldn't penalize you too very much.

But I think it's a right thing to penalize people who smokes, at least financially.
