Similarly, Liszt made full use of what modern, powerful pianofortes are capable of - although were he a man of our times, he’d probably have been fronting a heavy metal band.

Of course it also has to do with the fact that composers of the romantic era became increasingly adventurous in their harmonies and fond of employing enharmonic modulations, thus erasing any notion of difference between sharps and flats, from Chopin and Liszt to Wagner, Mahler and beyond.

My take is that, as always, musicians had to have some kind of sponsorship, and it slowly shifted from musician being sponsored by noble family (for example Liszt and Esterhazy) to getting a stipend from some institutions board (for example Arnold Schoenberg who worked as a bank clerk and got his first stipend through intervention of friends).

In fact you could say that mozart and liszt were 2 of the first "pop stars" because that archetype didn't exist before them.

Or if I listen to Mozart or Liszt, that's hipster because hipsters listen to classical music.
