If by modern science you mean Gregor Johann Mendel and Isaac Newton then yea it's only a few hundred years old.

It's incorrect to label Isaac Newton's (1642 - 1726) alchemy as fairly weird for that era.

This is interesting, since the piece by Mike Isaac was already very liberally biased.
