For those who are unfamiliar with his work, he worked on ingres, and postgres, which are now the bases for postgresql.

We are using Ingres Databases from the early 90s or late 80s.

Sounds a lot like what the Ingres guys must have said.

I don't know if I'd say Ingres is a failure.

This was my second or third coming to their establishments (first time I visited them they were porting from Ingres to Oracle; on my second visit (different) they informed me they are porting from Oracle to - Ingres).

Mike was my thesis advisor at Cal, and had enormous influence on all sorts of things beyond databases, including (I believe) the founding of the CS department and the negotiation of how Ingres technology spin off from Cal (which owns the IP), which became the prototype for how others would create companies like Inktomi and many more.

Though most articles says his open source contributions, Wikipedia page says "PostgreSQL evolved from the Ingres project at the University of California, Berkeley.

The same way Oracle "killed" Ingres: growing the customer base by an order of magnitude in the same time it takes your competitor to double theirs.

Except here, the guy who is saying "the old thing is dead!" is one of the guys who invented the "old thing." Stonebraker was among the first to implement a functioning relational database, and I don't think you can underestimate the importance of the Ingres papers to the field.

Considering it's roots with Ingres, it makes sense, but it also feels like a layered pun.

As counterpoint to that, you can look at Ingres' drawings, which are a world apart (it's likely he used a camera lucida, judging from the small size of the drawings and type of line).
