It's certainly possible that what I encountered, labeled as an 'icicle graph', is a nonstandard usage of the term.

Lets not forget our own Earth has entered periods where it was one massive boiling ocean, one big icicle, a bunch of lava.

IMO, those are (generally) nowhere near as useful as a flame/icicle graph.

I must say that the icicle plot of the same data is way more readable.

Anything ending -icle makes me think of icicle anyways.

My first thought was creamsicle[1]/popsicle[2]/icicle.

Ah, but the icicle isn’t really equivalent to water undripping and refreezing back into a nice cube-shaped object, at presumed room temperature (since our point of reference is the first gif).

These packages all work together to produce a crazy good setup, but in the past I’ve used helm, ivy, icicle, and vanilla Emacs.

Any flavor you like: lists (diskwave, omnidisk), treemaps (GrandPerspective), pie charts (DiskSavvy), sunburst (baobab), icicle, etc.

So someone else linked the original flamegraph site [0] and it describes icicle graphs as "inverting the y axis" but that's not only what's happening, right?

The paper for "Space-Reclaiming Icicle Plot (2020)" looks like it's going into the right direction.

And speaking of safe zones, so many frameworks miss the opportunity to visualize them, calling for Ice Sign "Icicle Fail" in almost every geometric shmup.

And if anyone from Plotly should happen to be reading this, a compact format like this might be an interesting option for Icicle Charts, akin to how the compact, indented version of Excel pivot tables saves horizontal space over the "classic" format pivot table.
