We migrated away from HipChat, I think the only thing that HipChat does better is it's support for Linux.

I'm also not sure of the differences between Slack and HipChat, I've only used HipChat.

Atlassian do have products that cater to non-programmers as well, like Jira, HipChat, Confluence and some service desk application.

HipChat is playing catchup constantly with Slack (except the @here feature; Slack was behind the ball on that one).

Message delivery is so much more reliable on Slack mobile than HipChat's app ever was (perhaps this was iOS specific?).

We also wrote a quick HipChat bot that keeps track of who's spent their quick-review-chip too.

I know HipChat runs on Linux very well, and on most of (if not all) my other devices.

Whether this be IRC/HipChat/Slack, a good Kanban board, daily standup, a Hangout etc..

Since I used the keyboard for most of my navigation in HipChat I find Slack incredibly annoying.

In Hipchat you can edit your last message with Vim style substitution strings.

My employer recently made the switch from Hipchat to Slack, and I can't really tell any difference in functionality.

They used Hipchat, and it was neat - my coworkers there greeted me with inline memes.

Hipchat would initiate laggy emoticon autocomplete after I typed an opening paren, which I found very obnoxious.

Sorry for the confusion, I mentioned Slack as an example as software that replaced something that was not defensible (Hipchat).
