After all, this manner of conversation does not go over well with wives and girlfriends, now would it?

I am growing increasingly concerned that one of my ex girlfriends has committed suicide.

Yes I just know my Masters in chemistry and my girlfriends Ph.

I didn't make friends, much less girlfriends.

Unfortunately, I am not one of those people:( (I had girlfriends that tasted those, but when it happened I lived in a city that was too small to get those products).

I also tend to engage in lots of negative novelty-seeking behavior: cheating on girlfriends, speeding since I can hardly pay attention to the road at 55, drinking too much, etc.

My version of this, with my Dad, was when I was precocious 16 year old, failing highschool because I was spending all my time hacking code, smoking pot, and girlfriends.

I realize you're joking, but it reminded me of this story: one of my ex-girlfriends actually did something like this as part of her PhD: she signed up half a dozen volunteers--including herself--to wear casts on one arm for six weeks.

About 40 years ago, when I was growing up in Southeastern Europe, in a place greatly influenced by both the Ottoman and the Habsburg empires, I do remember my grandma lying down in bed (covered) with one-two of her girlfriends after having lunch, coffee, and a cigarette.

If you knew "a" girl, it doesn't necessarily mean she'd want to date you, or that you'd date her girlfriends (what if her friends were all guys?) The idea is that you have a female to vouch for you, which is social proof.

The result (aside from the large majority who are one-to-one dating/engaged/married like it's always been) is that there are a ton of frustrated young men who (unless a miracle occurs) will remaining single until he dies, a small population of ultra-successful men who concurrently juggle multiple girlfriends (and possibly wives), and a large group girls who are annoyed that all the "good" men are taken.
