The reality is before the privatization Embraer was pretty much a nobody in the aerospace industry, unlike now.

It could also be because the USA has stopped a big sale from Embraer to Venezuela years ago.

Now Embraer is an international player in the aerospace industry with exports to many other countries.

There are spots of brightness in Latin America for example Embraer in Brazil, one of the top airplane manufactures which is a very difficult industry.

Much like Canada spied on Embraer to further Bombardier's interests, I wouldn't be surprised to see the US doing the same.

Or can Embraer count on Boeing having their bid numbers?

The company debuted with the EMB 110 Bandeirante in their product line, which was a 100% Embraer design sold both to domestic air carriers and the Brazilian Air Force.

And earlier this year the USA annulled a contract that Embraer had won to supply Super Tucano to the US Air force in favour of a local plane maker.

One of the problems is that a mid-size business jet (say Citation X or Gulfstream V/G550)costs as much to fly as a regional airliner like a Embraer E170/190($10k+/Hour) due to engine design optimization and is only marginally faster than the E170 in flight time assuming both fly non-stop.

On the plus side, the terrible economics of tiny regional jets are finally catching up to the airlines, and they're being used less or in some cases even retired in favor of the larger/more comfortable Embraer E-Jet series and the smaller end of the A320 family.

Most of my flights are to/from reasonable sized but not megacities (SF, St Louis, Kansas City, Nashville, Charleston, Phoenix, etc), and since I try for direct flights, I almost always end up on Embraer 145 or 175 or similar small planes.

(and lets not forget that Embraer was on the NSA espionage files too) So, this is not "anti-american", but a pretty wise decision..

My favorite is Embraer's Super Tucano, of which the US is buying 100 for the Afghan government.

Embraer has been building planes for the Brazilian Air Force, both self-designed and licensed-production, since the early 70s.

The real reason is that Boeing is a competitor to Embraer, so transfer of technology would be limited.
