A very nice book on the topic is Elias Canetti's Crowds and Power (Masse und Macht).

I'm happy to give Elias credit for a big part of the shift, but the reality is that first x86 exploit was published well before that Phrack article, and people quickly repurposed it.

A point I believe Antonio Elias made a couple years ago (I quite him a lot...) was that the satellite market is currently quite inelastic.

A lot of places seem to credit Rissanen, but I remember from when this was actually my field, that Elias did most of the work in the early '60s (and actually went on a tangent that Shannon considered in the '50s), and Rissanen's contribution was getting the finite word length arithmetic considerations properly done.

One application I'm thinking about right now is how to optimize "interpolative coding", which is a very tight way of compressing inverted indexes (better than Golomb/Rice/Elias), but so far very slow.

Actually, there's one quite famous study that touches on this topic, The Civilizing Process [1] by Norbert Elias.

Elias' is not entirely stupid, and would realise that paying for the logo is certainly likely to cost less than having to reprint office stationery, get new decals for the car, etc.

Elias shows how disgust -- which we often experience physiologically -- is a social construct that evolved through the ages.
