A kid drowning in a wave pool looks different from a mostly-able swimmer drowning from fatigue.

The issue that is being pointed out is that people drown within feet of another person who could help because drowning doesn't look like drowning.

I feel like I must've experienced near drowning or something, because I find the experience of drowning very easy to imagine and relate to.

That said, if you're watching for them, I just sort of defocus to watch the whole pool at once and look for the particular splashes of the drowning person's "swim" that become distinctive after you've seen it enough times.
