I always took it as a Cubist portrait of a face where the perspective is simultaneously from the side and the front.

Wouldn't a cubist app require a 3D model of the subject, or at least photos taken at multiple angles?

In my mind that doesn't make Strads any less valuable - an original Picasso is still valued so highly because it was created by the master that invented Cubism, but that doesn't mean that a modern painter couldn't create a Cubist painting that was "just as good", objectively.

Cubist painters were trying to free themselves from the confines of a single integral plane of perspective by allowing themselves to show various parts of the image from different viewpoints, different times, different styles, etc.
