I was watching Bergman films because I expected (from pop culture references) them to be crazy, abstract, unpredictable, and impossible to grasp.

As far as the others go, Swedish is definately very easy to learn, two languages I'm fluent in are German/English and after a year or so of just turning on the swedish radio (started with klartext a simplified swedish news broadcast and went on from there), I can watch Ingmar Bergman films in the original without subtitles.

Consider that there is a lineage of people who are essentially writing statements using a language "of the screen," people like Hitchcock, Bergman, Tarkovsky, Kubrick, Scorsese, to name a few.

And when you narrowed my references to Bergman, Kurosawa, Fellini, and Antonioni down to "Red Desert," you showed either that you are being dishonest or that you really don't know what you're dismissing when you dismiss all of these directors and their works.
