You mean like AutoCAD was killed by all the other CAD packages with a more conventional language?

Why the Hell did you pick the most arcane, obscure, and hopelessly-rooted-in-the-computer-science-department language in the world for an AutoCAD programming language?

The hardest part was figuring out how to convert ellipse sections and AutoCAD bulge arcs (line + bulge factor) to quadratic bezier curves.

While AutoCAD on Windows is by far the dominant setup there is a product for Macs called Vectorworks that is used by many firms.

AutoCAD brought Lisp mainstream for mechanical engineers, architects, and so many other 'rocket scientists' that I believe Emacs pales in comparison.

Imagine if all the proprietary software was open source, from OS X to Office to SunOS to SAS to Mathematica to Photoshop to AutoCAD to Google's search algorithms.

The usual meaning is "native apps" for smartphones, as opposed to traditional programs like PhotoShop and AutoCAD.

I've not seen any studies on this wrt app stores, but my impression is that you can be completely free (and it helps with a brand name, like Autocad or Adobe) -- or you can be a little pricey with no free trial -- and still be perceived as being "high quality".

An interesting note is that Autodesk started out with Autocad, which they coded in lisp (eventually transformed into autolisp.) They took the MS model to software development and proceeded to make bigger and more complex versions with increasing quantities of bugs to the extent that multiple crashes per day were the norm.
