This is a problem archivist are having right now with data from even 10 years ago.

I've even contacted the archivist at the Charles Babbage Institute because the information I wanted was only available there.

I'll see if I still have those bookmarks at home and throw them in a website archivist.

I suspect you're right, but...something about the arrangement makes my inner archivist/historian cringe.

If the file had already been given out to someone else, the archivist would find a slip of paper in it's place on the shelf, detailing it's whereabouts.

I literally feel like an archivist at times.

If you're a bigger company in particular, I'd treat it as an archival problem worth having a proper solution for (perhaps even an in-house archivist whose actual job is managing it).

It reminds me of that scene in "In the name of the father" which shows how one of the lawyer got access to some exculpatory evidences on a blunder from the "archivist".

Watch videos of Jason Scott ("Rogue Archivist" for the Internet Archive) to get an idea of how some of the ways assembled and archived information is used, like "Rescuing The Prince of Persia from the sands of time" or "So You Want To Murder a Software Patent".
