Ditto for the Aral Sea and the Salton Sea.

The fact remains: Aral Balkan's speech is one-sided.

In his recent (highly recommended) talk[1], Aral Balkan suggested a very interesting model, because there is another product that is well-known to adversely impact the people "near" the user as a secondary effect: tobacco.

As for this specific problem of businesses collecting massive amounts of personal data (and the associated "free (as in beer)" culture), I suggest showing people the talk by Aral Balkan that I linked at the top of my previous post.

Anyway, if you truly want to learn about what this backlash is about - which is a backlash against all aspects of "surveillance as a business model" - then I recommend watching the link I have posted here several times recently of Aral Balkan's recent talk[2], as he explains things in far more detail.

One final thing that seems to generally be missing from people's understanding of the Aral sea - it hasn't "dried up", so much as "gone underground" - there's still a vast amount of (severely polluted) water there - if you wander down to the old sea floor, most of it is several-yard-deep mud - very little of it is dusty and dry.

Do you not agree with me, that our current discussion is completely irrelevant with respect to Aral's primary point?

Aral Balkan chose to state his opinion in more than just one topic in the same talk.
