Saw Wai Hla did get his masters at Yangon University so there's a good chance he's from Myanmar.

Compare Myanmar with Thailand (BKK is just as far as Yangon is from the epicenter), yet only 1 under construction building fell in Bangkok, despite hundreds of much smaller buildings collapsing all over Myanmar.

It can't be all politics; although the US government still prefers "Rangoon" and "Burma", most of the press writes "Yangon" and "Myanmar".

On a trip to Hsipaw in Myanmar we visited the "Shan Palace" where the cousin of the deceased Shan Prince narrated his absolutely fascinating story of how he met his austrian wife in Colorado in the nineteen thirtees, took her back to Burma where she only upon arrival in Yangon realized that she fell in love with a real prince.

The quake was in northern Myanmar, so the major city (Yangon) in the south was apparently not too badly affected.

Even in Myanmar, which is a developing country in the middle of a civil war there are 7 monitoring stations in Yangon.

Btw, it will be great if you can make it to Yangon/Rangoon too.
