If you are suffering from numbness, that means your nerves (ulnar nerve, etc) are irritated.

For example, that motion you do to reach a key with your pinky, where you bend your wrist outward is called "ulnar deviation", and it can easily screw up the ulnar nerve that drives the pinky.

"ulnar nerve which emanates from the neck" - I should have said "my left ulnar nerve is pinched or aggravated in the neck", that's more accurate.

Split ergonomic keyboards eliminate the need to make some of these compromises by allowing the hands to be separated and allowing the sides to be "tented" (so the wrists can be less pronated) and positioned/oriented to eliminate ulnar deviation.
