This whole thread puts the image of Somalia being like something out of Mad Max...

What is it with libertarians thinking Somalia is some kind of free-market paradise?

I nearly died of malaria in the middle-east, but never got it in Kenya and Somalia when I lived there.

In my argument I used Somalia as a metaphor to transport an idea of a certain type of hostile enviroment.

See Somalia for the most recent example, but there are others.

Large parts of Somalia are governed by local Muslim groups.

Iraq, Yemen, Somalia are recent examples of failed states.

I say let anarchy in Somalia run it's course.

Moreover, for a nation with China's current levels of import/export and the rate at which cargo ships get attacked by pirates (as they go around Somalia to reach the Mediterranean), what's wrong with building up a navy?

They had an issue on Somalia a while back where most of the pieces could have appeared on any mainstream magazine that gets extra brownie points for the symbolic act of dedicating an issue on an under-reported topic.

This "if you like libertarianism so much, why don't you move to Somalia?" meme has got to stop.

Or if you advocate more Libertarian principles/discussion, you're immediately told to "move to Somalia".

My house isn't on fire!" Yeah, that guy needs to move to Somalia.

A "social contract" can only exist if there's a large enough middle class, which is something Somalia (and East Africa in general) lacks.

This is fairly high though (as much as 3 million Zimbabweans and many people form other African countries such as Somalia).

If you want a libertarian paradise where government doesn't interfere, move to Somalia.
