We are talking about people that would have 6 beers and the bar and have a bottle of Rioja when they get home.

A $10 bottle of gabbiano tastes almost nothing like a $10 bottle of monticello rioja and neither will taste anything like your jug of wine.

If you can tell the difference between grapefruit juice and orange juice, you can tell the difference between a gabbiano, a monticello rioja and a generic merlot.

Typical Rioja has heavy American oak flavours, while e.g.

No - I could put a glass of Burgundy, an oaky Rioja and ripe Australian Syrah in front of you and you'd be able to trivially tell them apart, no training needed.

I don't have anything handy, unfortunately as I have the bad habit not to organize my findings outside of keeping the conclusions read or made in my head, but those reads made me switch to Spanish Rioja from French Pinot Noir.

Personal anecdote: I can enjoy a $35 bottle of wine from Rioja just as much as a $200 bottle from Bordeaux depending on what I'm eating and I think food plays the bigger role in if I enjoy a wine or not than the wine itself.

Hours earlier we were eating local, seasonal stone-fruit and some so-so grocery store tier charcuterie paired with wine from Rioja I had brought for an aperativo, that quite honestly was 1/5 the price of the bill but overall way more balanced and satisfying then anything I had in that restaurant.

I married into a Spanish family who are all foodies even by Spanish standards, and I love the fact that when we're eating together we talk about the food we're eating, the last time we ate this food, the meal that reminds us of, oh and remember those amazing roast peppers we had in Rioja etc.

All of the TV shows, films, etc are a constant rehash of things from their childhood, the bands they listened to as kids never really stop, they're not paid enough to take on adult responsibilities like mortgages or having kids, and, it seems, they're still expected to drink sweet, sugary crap instead growing into adulthood with a good Rioja like they ought to.

But now do a blind taste with someone off the streets, and ask which one is the "oaky Rioja".

"And that wine prices are based on their taste not their alcohol content?" If wine prices were determined by taste then the most expensive wines in the world would be Oregon pinos, Rioja tempranillos, albarinos, etc.

I never looked at the map before now, but it seems that Rioja's location is very well-situated for higher resveratrol and the wine is great.

Rioja (Tempranillo) is, but is inconsistently labeled.

I don't know about the other countries in the map but I can see La Rioja, Spain, which has a bit over 300k people, while Catalonia has more than 7M.
