Whether it's worth the cost is another issue, but even ignoring the other advantages Osmium brings up, it's a better connector.

You can smell a few inorganic things (notably, elemental osmium, whose name literally means "smell" because that's so unusual), but your receptors are unlikely to trigger for anything that far removed.

By "over what time scale?" I think Osmium meant "yes, more people would die in the short term, but would more people die in the long term?" It's a valid and important question.

To expand on what Osmium said, a "golden age" is more like a "goldrush age": A big breakthrough opens up a new conceptual frontier, and the golden age is scientists rushing in to homestead and start mining the new landscape.

Tungsten is near 20g/cm3 and is much more reasonable as far as price is concerned (Osmium is basically a precious metal).

If you whack enough neutrons into it, you'll eventually get Rhenium and Osmium.
