Extending this comment, Good Omens is an excellent book, but not anything like the Discworld series.

If everyone believed in these omens, they had real power and the predictions these astronomers made may have had large impacts.

It was all about omens that could determine the success of harvests or battles.

I like the one suggested in the book Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, of measuring faith in Alps.

I had my copy of Good Omens autographed by Gaiman, whence I remarked that I needed the other half now (this was 2011).

But among the things many religions - including Avraamic ones most common in Western world - disapprove, directly in their scripture and in many other sources - is divination, fortune telling and seeking omens.

These are not only omens for Justin.tv but also for any new media intermediary, such as youtube or vimeo, where even if their ToS prohibits X, users continue to violate X on a day-to-day basis.

Heck, I know several of extremely analytical people, in hard sciences even, that in their personal lives border on hysteria or take note of such things as omens (sometimes laughingly, but you can see it still disturbs them).

My favorite Pratchett book is actually "Good Omens", his collaboration with Neil Gaiman back before either of them were famous.

My point about "aren't approved" is that many religions explicitly recommend divination, fortune telling, seeking omens, and the like, but only in a manner approved by that religion i.e.

I'd recommend Neil Gaiman; and definitely read Good Omens, a book that Terry and Neil co-wrote.

I don't know if you've read Good Omens, but there's a bit in that where each demon is reporting on what they've done recently.

I don't think Small Gods is a collaboration, that's Good Omens.
