The real problem seems to be that Nate Silver's (and 538's) brand value exceeded the available payment from NYTimes.

You can tell Nate Silver's really definitely right, because he uses lots of exclamation points when he's strawmanning his opponents.

Incidentally, Nate didn't sell out when 538 left the NYT, he sold out when 538 was picked up by the NYT.

I believe Nate Silver did the math and valued the entire global taxi business at about $200bn.

And commentators that are attempting to respond to that point are obviously setting up a straw man for political purposes (hi Nate Silver!).
