You've gotta understand that Mohammad is a very significant and sacred symbol to Muslims everywhere.

My understanding was that the CBC's decision not to run cartoons of the prophet Mohammad was based on their institutional duty to be inclusive to all Canadians.

When I hear things like Mohammad Atta was waterboarded over 400 times, that very number tells me that it couldn't have been very effective.

This kind of thinking, that society should accommodate a populations likes and dislikes, is why we get groups that want to forbid Mohammad cartoons and others in the same country that want to forbid religious clothes like Burqa.

It is also worth noting that Mohammad Pahlavi (aka 'the Shah' and the person we backed after the coup) was a really, really heinous individual who did some incredibly nasty shit over a couple of decades as he clung to power.

Printing cartoons Mohammad doing weird things is pretty seriously distressing moderate Muslims -- it's like if someone in America were to making fun of black people being slaves -- it's a no-no, you don't go there, it crosses a line, it's insulting black people, why do that?

The last time this happened was in 1977, when an Islamic group made threats if "Mohammad, Messenger of God" was shown.

Naively, we can now say Facebook views breasts as "offensive" as pictures of Mohammad or decapitation videos.

Abu Zubaydah, for example, became "completely unresponsive, with bubbles rising through his open, full mouth." Internal CIA records describe the waterboarding of Khalid Shaykh Mohammad as evolving into a "series of near drownings.

Mohammad is a very sacred symbol to Muslims, re-publishing offending material (and similarly approving of the cartoons by saying "I am Charlie") is just needlessly insulting and distressing the plenty of other moderate Muslims.

It should also be noted that there is absolutely zero contemporary historical evidence for the existence of Mohammad.

These pronouncements have been interpreted to apply to modern times as well, since Muslims are to emulate Mohammad.

Not an expert but my guess is the earliest use of diacritics appeared around 100 years after Mohammad's death.
