An explicit attempt at synthesizing Buddhist philosophy with Christianity was made by the Catholic monk Thomas Merton back in the 1960s.

I mean, the Catholic Thomas Merton found inspiration in Zen Buddhism, and he found the Zen practices, detached from the Buddhist beliefs, worthwhile.

It hired Merton and Scholes, but used a completely different trading strategy.

There are a few professors -- Karatzas at Columbia, Avellaneda at Courant, Cinlar at Princeton, Shreve at CMU, Merton at MIT, a few more.

And blaming Merton & Scholes for the Long-Term Capital Management fiasco is another error: The fact that they (actually Meriwether, but anyway) invested where they should have not (Russian bonds, look at that!

(This is the same group the gave Merton and Scholes a prize for the derivatives pricing model that brought down the universe.) If all decisions were completely rational, we would all be programming Python.

One can make money in the stock market without any trading at all; Merton Miller often emphasized that prices could adjust to new information without any trades taking place, if asset holders and potential buyers agreed on the impact of the new information on the asset value.

The upshot of this is you end up with a pretty crazy system whereby someone at one end of the street could pay twice as much council tax as someone at the other end (in the case of, say, Wandsworth - which has one of the lowest council tax rates in the UK, and Merton - which is more around the average).

Some people like "New seeds of contemplation" by Merton, but I find Keating more accessible.

For anyone looking to learn more about Trappists, "The Seven Storey Mountain" by Thomas Merton is quite a famous account of the life of a Trappist monk.

I have not read that book by the late Thomas Merton, though I am familiar with the author and I've heard others recommend Merton's works numerous times.

As did Kenneth Arrow[0], Merton&Scholes[1] (Fisher Black had already died at that point, and they don't award it posthumously), and Aumann[2].

Admittedly, a top tier college (Merton, Oxford), but they were still doing these arts degrees which people hate on so much.
