Christopher Marlowe are not well known and Shakespeare is (but it is essential to this that merely reusing-retelling-retheming of classical aspects is not enough for this, many others besides Shakespeare did this in those days, as many films, and tv-series do it now).

The Hard Boiled detective, based in cheap pulp novels and most famously played onscreen by Bogart as characters like Sam Spade (The Maltese Falcon) and Philip Marlowe (The Big Sleep), is usually living in the USA or some even less lawful place, and exists in a world of inherent corruption all around him.

Incidentally, while re-reading Chandler's "The Lady in the Lake," I realized that the scene in which Marlowe meets his employer, dozing off in a "high-backed chair" in his club's library, was a description of the library at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

If anything it reads kinda like a self critique by Marlowe, but that reading is also kinda shaky.

Better than Gould (not difficult), Mitchum and even Bogart, Ed Bishop is the best Marlowe.
