A lot of the (performance) problems are probably caused by the device mapper backend being used on CentOS...

Device mapper, on the other hand, is just plain slow (and buggy, when used on Ubuntu 14.4).

There's a whole bunch of startups and SMEs doing similar stuff at similar levels: PhenomWorld, Solaytec, Mapper, Nemo Healthcare are a small number of pretty successful ones that I know of, and there's a whole bunch more.
