I think the hardware is just an IR illuminator+camera.

That includes: writing a brand new ESP32 console application for controlling all the pins of my ESP32 that drives the LED illuminator.

I can easily see the infrared FaceID illuminator flash when I unlock my phone in a dark room.

Problem is that it almost universally requires you to photograph a standard light source or a standard reflectance target under a standard illuminator.

Mostly what it would do is make it look like you were wearing those Craftsman Illuminator eye lights that they sell in hardware stores.

Then the illuminator and camera just get mounted on the aluminum extrusion.

For eliminating scriptoria positions, and thus the path to becoming a master illuminator, ensuring future generations who cannot so much as hold a quill properly?

But someone who makes high-end ink can produce in much higher volume than a single illuminator requires (not to mention it takes more than just ink).

Probably need an LED illuminator ring for $10 too.

I worked for an optical company building complete objective lenses and illuminator optics for steppers using G-line, I-line, and ArF and KrF laser sources.

I think it would be a cool exercise to figure out how much optical power you would see at, idk, 5cm from your illuminator.

Is there a safe way for a hobbyist to get an IR illuminator and be sure that I won't make somebody blind with it?

If you prefer a "smoky" alternative, the A168WGG[2] has a gunmetal gray tint to the band, the face is blacked out with clear letters, and the illuminator only lights up the letters.

Years ago I got an "IR illuminator" (from aliexpress, probably) that I wanted to use with my raspberrypi NoIR camera, for fun.

The cheap stereomicroscopes don't have "indirect reflected light" but it's not hard at all to add a ring illuminator or just arrange a flashlight or other led light that comes in from the side.
