Users already had to login to AIM and check one yahoo, hotmail, home ISP, and school e-mail accounts.

The greater problem is getting your mail delivered to the vast majority of people with gmail/hotmail/yahooo mail.

IE users are on the computer maybe once a day at the end of the day to check their Hotmail accounts.

Microsoft did the smartest acquisition in 1997 when they bought Hotmail and caught the train.

They kept their @aol.com or @yahoo.com or @hotmail.com addresses and I could still send and receive emails.

I have endless problems with some emails going missing (hotmail and the rest of microsoft’s domains are the worst).

Ideally you would like to decorrelate the address from the service provider (lots of people are prisoners of gmail, hotmail or their ISP).

My best guess: malware on the forum OR they exploited a vuln on Gmail.com similar to how hotmail.com & yahoo.com used to be very very vulnerable..

Strangly hotmail does a better job here...

If you want to commercialise the public toilet in 2003, just add a stack of mildly interesting sponsored magazines, and build an internet station with Hotmail like a public telephone.

I have had similar problems over the last 15 years that I have been running my own mail server, but mostly with hotmail when they were the gmail of their time.

In a way, back then, Gmail did "exactly" what Hotmail did..

If you create "james053164@hotmail.com" it will get spam eventually.

Google's spamfilter is the most annoying one, followed by Hotmail; everyone else usually works pretty much fine.

In exchange for your bond, the company vouches for your IP to Google/Yahoo/Hotmail/etc and you're allowed to send your own email.

In my few years of using this, and I'm by no means an expert on email servers, I have rarely had issues beyond ending up in Hotmail's and Gmail's spambox.
